CAR HIRE
In Florida it is advisable to hire a car, the place is just so big and during the summer months it is just to hot to walk very far.
On the whole the bus/transport system is good but you would miss so much without your own Transport.
Over the years we have booked flights or fly drives from lot of different travel agents, and our experience is that if you manage to get a cheap fly drive they add what you think you have saved onto the car hire, and in most cases you don't have not a lot of choice but to bite the bullet and pay it, if you say no I don’t need a car, the company add a loading of about £60 per person sometimes even more onto the flight price.
Loss Damage Waiver Insurance (LDW)
When you book either your fly drive deal or book a car separate you will need to included LDW insurance, THIS IS A MUST INSURANCE POLICY when hiring a car in the USA as the cost’s could add up to thousands and thousands of dollars if the unforeseen happened.
LDW or CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) covers is a 3rd party insurance it relates to damage or injury to property or the person of a third party, this is similar to our fully comprehensive insurance.
Cost around $18.00 per day
Car Hire extras most of these are compulsory
SLI extra insurance if you require it, this covers a claim up to a million dollars and is NOT COMPULSORY its an extra Cost about $13.00 per day
Sales tax is compulsory at 7% Costs about $14 per week
Florida Environment tax is compulsory. Costs about $2.00 per day
Airport operating Fee compulsory varies between airports. Cost of $2-$3.00 per day
Tank of gas/petrol car is full when you receive it. Costs about $30.00 full tank
Tank of Fuel
If you take your hire car back empty you will be charges about $30.00 for a tank of fuel when it will only cost you about $15.00 at a petrol station.
TIP !! FILL UP TANK NEAR TO AIRPORT IT IS MUCH CHEAPER
If you pay for your LDW before you go most of the taxes are included in the cost. At the Florida airport all you need to do is leave the cost of the petrol on a credit card if you take the car back with a full tank of fuel this will be reduced off your visa bill.
Upgrading
Which ever method you use to book your car you will be asked to upgrade either at time of booking or in the USA and after a long flight, when all you want to do is get on your way to your accommodation and sleep is the last thing you need.
You will be told your the car is so small and usually the size of a small fiesta or golf polo and they have a special deal if you upgrade now. We have never upgraded and have always received a car that has been suitable for our family of 4 now adults and 2-3 suit cases.
We usually have a Economy 2 or 4 door car which is about the size of an Ford Escort
Take our advice and say it is ok and we have that size of car at home save your money and if you do feel it is to small you can always upgrade in a day or so.
Additional extras
Infant seats under 4 is compulsory Cost $5 per day
Tip!! To save this cost take your own child car seat, most have the type that seat belts fit around.
We do have 2 child booster seats in the house if you need to use them, feel free to use
Additional drivers this bugs me! I have paid for 4 fly drives but it is another extra cost of $5 per day for an additional driver. In 2004 Travel City have now added an additional driver to the policy with Dollar car hire at no extra cost.
Young Drivers Insurance under 25’s Cost of $20 per day
As you can see the cost can soon add up so shop around for car hire as the price varies from company to company and can ranges from £130-£250 per week.
Most cars are of higher standard than the UK and have AC, radio/cassette or CD player, a big boot and good leg room, and 99% are automatic drive which make life a little difficult at first, but easy once you forget your left leg its easy.
I drove for the 1st time in 2004 and found it very very easy and if I can do it so can you.
If you do have the misfortune to have an accident you must contact the police and make a police report even if it only a small knock.
